Volunteer fire departments across our area are always looking for a way to raise money for their companies. Fire officials in Sunbury are hoping to raise much-needed cash and put you behind the wheel of a brand new car.

"We will do whatever it takes to raise money for our fire department, anything from chicken barbeques to spaghetti dinners to selling raffle tickets, even chancing off a new car," said Dan Saxton, a firefighter with Goodwill Hose Company in Sunbury.

The latest fundraiser involves a 2008 Ford Mustang Coupe with 210 horsepower, a six-disc changer, power seats and plenty more options. Saxton said he's trying to make a profit of around $10,000 to help pay the department's growing bills.

"The cost of fuel to run these big trucks is just enormous and with rising costs of everything else, we are struggling.  Revenues are down so we always have to be looking for greater and more sources of income," Saxton explained.

He added the Mustang raffle is a creative and exciting way for the fire department raise money and if it's a successful one, he said he could see a car raffle like this one every year.

"If we can get the community behind us and next year we have 500 people or 750 people donate $100. We'd be giving away new Corvette Zo6. Absolutely!" Saxton added.

Raffle tickets for the car cost $100 a piece. Firefighters said there are only 300 available so the odds of winning are 300 to one. The department bought the car for $20,000 so if all the tickets are sold, they should earn their $10,000.
